Rooted in Resilience
How Stella is Finding Her Strength
On the playground, Stella is easy to spot.
She kneels quietly in the grass, turning over leaves in search of beetles and examining flower petals with careful focus. The natural world makes sense to her. It’s patient. It doesn’t rush her curiosity.
In the classroom, things can feel more complicated.
Stella has a heart that looks out for others, especially classmates who are struggling or left out. But carrying her own challenges can feel overwhelming. Some days, her emotions rise faster than she can steady them. On those days, learning pauses and time is spent resetting instead of reading or writing.
And still, every morning, Stella arrives with a smile. No matter how hard the day before was, she lights up when she sees her mentor. That consistent presence reminds her that she is capable and valued, even on the hardest days.
At first, even small academic tasks felt out of reach. Literacy work was often met with frustration. But with patience and trust, something began to shift. Stella allowed her mentor to sit beside her. Then to guide her. Then to help her sound out words she once avoided.
Finishing a reading assignment. Staying in the classroom a little longer. Asking for help instead of shutting down. These may seem like small steps, but for Stella they are milestones built on courage. She is learning how to express her big feelings in safe ways. She is building perseverance in her schoolwork and confidence in her relationships.
Stella still searches for insects and studies flowers with wonder. And now, she is discovering something just as powerful: her own resilience.
