Wherever She Goes

A sudden move could not break the bond between Stella and her mentor.

When we first shared Stella's story, we wrote about a little girl who studied beetles and flower petals with quiet focus, who looked out for classmates who were struggling, and who was beginning to find her footing with reading. Since then, Stella has kept growing, and her mentor has kept showing up.

At just seven, Stella carries a deep sense of compassion. She is often the first to notice when a classmate needs help, and she goes out of her way to be kind to the little girl who sits beside her. The same determination that can look like defiance on a hard day is also the tenacity that helps her navigate circumstances no child should have to carry.

Art has become a refuge. While parts of her day can feel chaotic, art offers her something steady. Her mentor has watched her layer colors and textures, planning each piece with care, delighting in the chance to explain her vision and simply have a trusted adult sit beside her while she creates.

Then everything changed. Stella's family moved suddenly, and she had to leave her school before the year ended. Her classmates said goodbye. Her teacher worried about what would come next. Through those final days, her mentor offered a steady reassurance: we are going to find your new school, and we are going to come see you.

When the family became hard to reach, Stella's mentor began showing up at school pickup, hoping to connect with her mother. After several tries, they crossed paths. Stella's mother shared that the family had moved and her phone number had changed, and she passed along the information about Stella's new school district.

For many children, a sudden move means losing the adults who care about them most. The teachers, counselors, and support staff who showed up every day are often left wondering what happened. For Stella, the story is different. Her mentor is staying with her, connecting with her new school and her family so the relationship can continue right where it left off.

That is the promise at the center of our work. Not for a season, and not until things get complicated, but for as long as it takes.
