Finding Her Voice

Dahlia's story of growth and belonging

When Dahlia's mentor began working with her in the fall, Dahlia often struggled to communicate and express what she was feeling. At school, she frequently withdrew from peers, avoided class projects, and sometimes became overwhelmed enough to need support from the nurse's office before being sent home.

Over the following months, through steady encouragement from her mentor and close collaboration with her teacher, something began to shift. Today, Dahlia can often be seen smiling, singing, and chatting with classmates throughout the school day. She now regularly volunteers to present her work in front of the class, something that once felt out of reach.

One afternoon, a classmate sat beside Dahlia and asked to share one of her drawings so they could color together. As they sketched turtles and cats, the two laughed and talked with ease and comfort while Dahlia taught her friend how to draw.

Since the beginning of the year, Dahlia has stayed present in class for the full day and made significant gains in reading and writing. As she continues building confidence in expressing herself and connecting with others, she is also strengthening the social and emotional skills that will support her well beyond the classroom.
